Jimmy Hendry, a plumber dedicated to improving practices and regulation in the trade, was announced as UK Plumber of the Year at the 2022 On The Tools Awards.
Jimmy is an ambassador for change in the plumbing industry, tackling issues like gas safety and promoting the need for defibrillators on sites.
He worked his way from apprentice to Master Plumber, and now has a TQFE teaching degree to help train the next generation of plumbers.
Jimmy said: “This award means the world to me, I’ve always tried to raise the bar in the industry, and I hope I can continue to raise it. Thank you to my partner Elaine for her continued support and I’d also like to thank my Friends Eckhart Mueller and Heimo Hellwig of the Namibian Institute of Mining Technology (NIMT) who gave their lives for the education and improvement of their country.”
CEO of On The Tools, Lee Wilcox, said: “It is clear that Jimmy has a genuine passion for his trade. He campaigns for better working practices and to make the industry a better, safer place for everyone. Jimmy is now using his experience and skill to teach a new cohort of plumbers his craft.
“Celebrating and championing UK tradespeople is what On The Tools stands for. The industry, and the people behind it have had a challenging couple of years following the pandemic and turbulence that has continued to grip the country. The mental health impact for tradespeople and resilience demonstrated was evident in this year’s award winners stories. The awards are so important as they allow us to give recognition to the incredible people and businesses who contribute towards the success of UK construction.”
The event was presented by Irish comedian Keith Farnan, with 400 guests in attendance at a gala dinner, including builders, tradespeople and leading construction brands.
In total, 18 awards were given out during the night, ranging from Apprentice of the Year, to a Special Recognition, and Plasterer of the year award for Naima Ben-Moussa, a plasterer dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic abuse by repairing damage to homes through her charity Rebuilding Lives.
