Ahead of National Apprenticeship Week, which is to take place from 10 to 16 February, MCS interviewed Leah Robson, owner of Your Energy Your Way, and her apprentice Georgia.
Leah
Why did you decide to take on apprentices within your business?
“I worked in the industry for two years before meeting another female tradesperson. I realised getting an apprenticeship is a big barrier for many, especially women and underrepresented groups. That’s when I decided Your Energy Your Way could make a difference by offering apprenticeships.”
How do apprentices contribute to your team’s success?
“They keep the team young at heart and their enthusiasm brings fresh energy. Our longest-serving apprentice is now in her third year, and we hope she and the others continue working for Your Energy Your Way as our future installers.”
What would you say to other installers thinking about hiring an apprentice?
“It’s hard work and a bit of a gamble, but in an industry that isn’t currently replenishing its workforce, can you risk having to attract all your future installers on the open market?”
What challenges have you faced when taking on apprentices, and how did you overcome them?
“Costs can be a big challenge – wages, insurance, and vans all add up. Financial support is limited, but we’ve raised additional funds as apprentices are an investment in our future.”
Would you recommend apprenticeships as a pathway for tackling the skills gap in the renewables industry?
“I don’t see any other way. These aren’t jobs you train to do in a classroom – you need that hands-on experience.”
Do you have any advice/tips for apprentices?
“Always think ahead about what you can learn or how you can help. Don’t rely solely on college – use the resources available to learn as much as you can.”
Georgia
Georgia started her Level 3 Low Carbon Heating Technician apprenticeship in November 2024. The apprenticeship was developed by MCS, the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) and a group of heat pump installers.
What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship in renewables?
“I was fascinated by the emerging technology and the fast-paced, hands-on nature of the work. It’s growing industry with endless opportunities, and I wanted to be a part of the UK’s transition to renewable energy.”
What skills have you gained through your apprenticeship?
“I’ve learned both technical and practical skills, from tackling retrofitting challenges to working directly in customers’ homes, the combination of theory and practical has really boosted my confidence when on site.”
What advice would you give someone thinking about starting an apprentice in renewables?
“Go for it! It’s a rapidly growing industry with high job satisfaction – you’re making a real difference and getting invaluable hands-on experience, all whilst being part of the solution for a more sustainable future.”
What are your future career goals?
“I want to become a fully qualified low carbon heating engineer, helping the UK transition to cleaner and greener energy.”
